What Is Cannabutter & How Do You Make It?

Cannabutter is a primary ingredient in many cannabis-infused recipes or edibles. Known as an “extraction” as the THC – the psychoactive part of cannabis that gets you high – is extracted from the cannabis and infused with the butter. 

The cannabutter cooking process is very important. Infusing the butter over low heat for several hours, never letting it boil, allows for full activation of the THC without scorching the herb.

Important: We highly recommend you decarboxylate your cannabis before you cook with it. The decarbing process ensures your cannabis is best prepared for cooking.

You can use any kind of unsalted butter you like, though we find that using high-quality butter provides a better taste. High-quality butter has less water, so you will get a higher yield. Your finished butter will have a green tinge to it because of the cannabis.

Equipment needed

  • Spatula
  • Stove
  • Large saucepan / pot
  • Whisk
  • Large glass bowl
  • Strainer/Sieve to fit over glass bowl
  • Cheese cloth
  • Plastic wrap or airtight container
  • Knife
  • Butter
  • Cannabis buds
  1. Melt the butter on low heat in a saucepan. Add the ground buds, and simmer on low heat for 45 minutes, stirring frequently.
  2. Strain the butter into a glass dish with a tight-fitting lid. Push the back of a spoon against the plant matter and smash it against the strainer to squeeze out every drop of butter available. When you’re done, discard the plant matter.
  3. Use your cannabutter immediately, or refrigerate or freeze until it is time to use. You can easily scale this recipe up for larger batches of cannabutter. One pound of butter (4 sticks) can absorb 1 ounce of cannabis, but you may want to simmer for up to 60 minutes.

Cannabis Almond Milk recipe

This recipe works best when the almonds you are using have been soaked in water for 8 hours (overnight is OK). Drain the water and rinse almonds before using in the recipe below.

Time Required: 2 hours

What You Need:

  • food processor
  • ½ cup raw almonds
  • 3 cups water, distilled
  • cannabis, coarsely ground (recommended 1-4 grams)
  • cheesecloth or tight strainer


  1. Blend the almonds and water in a food processor until it resembles milk.
  2. Strain the almond milk through a cheesecloth or strainer.
  3. Add the strained milk to a saucepan and bring to a light boil.
  4. Add the ground cannabis and reduce heat. Simmer for 2 hours, stirring frequently.
  5. Remove from heat. Chill and serve, or use as a replacement for milk in any recipe.
