This year, World Mental Health Day (10th October) comes at a time when all of our lives have changed dramatically. The coronavirus pandemic has had a real impact on the mental health and wellbeing of many of us, and greater investment in mental health has never been so important.
Mental Health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. There is no single cause for mental health disorders; in fact, they can be caused by a mixture of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. People who have a family history of mental health disorders may be more prone to developing one at some point. Changes in brain chemistry from substance abuse or changes in diet can also cause mental disorders. Psychological factors and environmental factors such as upbringing and social exposure can form the foundations for harmful thought patterns associated with mental disorders. Your mental health doesn’t always stay the same. It can change as circumstances change and as you move through different stages of your life.

In 2017, ‘Our World In Data’ studied the estimates of mental health disorder prevalence and the associated disease burden. This study estimates that 792 million people live with a mental health disorder. This is slightly more than one in ten people globally!

Research shows that CBD can help treat severe medical conditions like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, anxiety, and depression. CBD products have been products of interest in treating social anxiety and anxiety disorders. A recent clinical trial has shown that CBD can effectively reduce anxiety.
Existing studies suggest that CBD holds promise in the treatment of a number of conditions including depression, anxiety, epilepsy, and sleep issues, among other things. Below are some of the findings;
A large-scale study on the use of CBD in the treatment of pediatric epilepsy found that CBD reduced the frequency of seizures by more than 50% in 43% of the patients with Dravet syndrome. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a cannabis-derived medication containing CBD, Epidiolex, to treat certain childhood seizure disorders.
Some studies suggest that CBD may help alleviate symptoms of anxiety. One study looks at the possible neural basis for CBD reducing symptoms of social anxiety disorder. A 2015 study published in the journal Neurotherapeutics analyzed the existing preclinical studies on the use of CBD for anxiety and found that CBD was effective for a number of anxiety conditions including: Generalized anxiety disorder, Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The permanente Journal published a study reporting that 79% of participants experienced a reduction in anxiety.
Experts believe that CBD's potential benefits for depression are related to its positive effect on serotonin receptors in the brain. Low serotonin levels are likely connected to depression. CBD doesn’t necessarily boost serotonin levels, but it may affect how your brain’s chemical receptors respond to the serotonin that’s already in your system.
A 2014 animal study found that CBD’s effect on these receptors in the brain produced both an antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects.
A more recent 2018 review of existing studies concluded that CBD has anti-stress effects, which may reduce depression related to stress.
A 2019 literature review on CBD and PTSD found that CBD may be helpful. However, it concludes that scientists still need to carry out more research into its therapeutic uses, effectiveness, and safety.
Some research suggests that taking CBD immediately after a traumatic event might make it more difficult for the brain to form the memories that may later develop and cause PTSD symptoms.
A 2016 study found evidence that drugs acting on the endocannabinoid system may reduce the symptoms that a person with PTSD experiences after a memory extinction procedure. This is because the endocannabinoid system, which includes CBD receptors, can affect anxiety and memory, two factors that play a significant role in PTSD.
When it comes to treating depression, CBD does appear to have some benefits over antidepressant medications. Most antidepressant medications take weeks to start working. However, a 2019 animal study found that CBD has a fast and sustained antidepressant-like effect.
CBD may also result in fewer side effects than antidepressant medication. Insomnia, sexual dysfunction, mood swings, and agitation are common side effects of antidepressants. CBD has not shown similar issues.
As mentioned, this is an area that’s still being actively studied, and new research and reviews are published every year. As researchers begin to better understand CBD and its potential benefits or concerns, information about how to most effectively use the product will continue to change.
While CBD may offer some benefits over antidepressant medications, it isn't a replacement. Never stop taking prescribed medication without talking to your health care provider first. Abruptly stopping the medication may cause serious side effects. While studies show the compound is generally safe, it may interact with other medications.
