CBD & FIBROMYALGIA

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes widespread pain throughout the body, accompanied by fatigue, sleep problems, and mental or emotional distress. Patients with fibromyalgia often experience abnormal pain perception processing, which is a sensitivity to pain. It affects an estimated 1 in 20 people, the majority whom are women. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain and spinal cord process painful and non-painful signals.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms often begin after an event, such as physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress. In other cases, symptoms gradually accumulate over time with no single triggering event.

The primary symptoms of fibromyalgia include:

  • Widespread pain: The pain associated with fibromyalgia often is described as a constant dull ache that has lasted for at least three months. To be considered widespread, the pain must occur on both sides of your body and above and below your waist.
  • Fatigue: People with fibromyalgia often awaken tired, even though they report sleeping for long periods of time. Sleep is often disrupted by pain, and many patients with fibromyalgia have other sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea.
  • Cognitive difficulties: A symptom commonly referred to as "fibro fog" impairs the ability to focus, pay attention and concentrate on mental tasks.

Fibromyalgia often co-exists with other conditions, such as:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Migraine and other types of headaches
  • Interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome
  • Temporomandibular joint disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Postural tachycardia syndrome

The cause for fibromyalgia is not known, but with the result of research over time has resulted in effective treatments that can help manage its impact.

How does CBD work for fibromyalgia?

Researchers cannot decisively say why the compound appears to reduce some fibromyalgia symptoms, or why it works for some people and not others. However, numerous studies have produced positive results.

The pain relieving effects of CBD are likely down to its effects on the brain. It may interrupt the nerve pathways that send signals of pain between the brain and the rest of the body.

CBD and other cannabinoids attach to specialized receptors in your brain. One of these receptors, called a CB2 receptor, plays a role in managing pain and inflammation.

When CBD enters the body, it may attach to the CB2 receptor, or it may cause the body to produce natural cannabinoids (endocannabinoid's) that attach to these receptors. This may then result in reduced pain and inflammation.

The Research

  • 2020 review concludes that the emerging data suggest that cannabis can have a positive effect on fibromyalgia. The researchers also say, however, that the current evidence is still limited.
  • 2019 randomized study looks at the effects of Bediol, a drug that contains both CBD and THC, in people with fibromyalgia. It suggests that more people who took Bediol reported a 30% decrease in pain scores compared with those who took a placebo.
  •  A 2017 study concludes that CBD might counteract the hypersensitivity of cells surrounding nerves in people with chronic pain, including those with fibromyalgia. However, it also points to the need for more research in this area.
  • 2015 review analyzes existing research into cannabinoid usage for chronic pain, though not specifically pain linked to fibromyalgia. Seven of the 11 studies included in the review suggest that CBD relieves pain.
  • A different 2015 review looks at the results of 28 randomized, clinically controlled trials of medical cannabis as a treatment for pain. Many of the trials focused on pain linked to multiple sclerosis. The review suggests that high quality evidence supports the use of medical cannabis to treat chronic pain in some contexts.

DOES CBD WORK AS A SLEEP AID: THE RESEARCH

DOES CBD OIL WORK AS A SLEEP AID? LETS TAKE A LOOK AT THE RESEARCH

For many people, getting a decent night’s sleep is tough. This might be related to health issues, lifestyle choices, or the ordinary stress of everyday life. Fortunately, there are natural supplements that can help enhance your sleep quality and reduce the amount of time it takes you to fall asleep.

CBD oil is one supplement worth investigating. CBD may be a solution to help us achieve better sleep without the adverse effects that come with pharmaceutical medications, according to research.

This post will go over the benefits of CBD for sleep as well as the research that has been done on the subject thus far. By the end of this article, you’ll know whether CBD is a feasible choice for enhancing your sleep quality.

Struggle to fall asleep?

THE RESEARCH

There has been a lot of research into CBD oil and how it interacts with your brain and hormones to reduce stress and relax your body. CBD has became popular for its use in anxiety treatment but its rising to fame for its potential to help reduce the effects of sleep disorders. This is because CBD has been proven to help with the root causes of sleep problems. Causes of sleep issues can include pain and stress related disorders, such as PTSD.

Research published in the National Library of Medicine suggests that CBD may be a solution for people who suffer from sleep disorders. In the aforementioned studies, researchers looked at the effects of cannabidiol on people who had trouble sleeping due to stress and/or anxiety.

In the first study, participants who received 160mg of CBD reported increased sleep duration compared to those who took 5mg of Nitrazepam.

In another study, researchers looked at the effects of CBD in combination with other prescription medicines in 72 adults with anxiety and sleep disorders.

The CBD doses varied from 25 to 175mg. According to the researchers, 25mg was the most effective anxiety dosage, but higher dosages were required to address disturbed sleep. During the three-month study, investigators followed up with the participants every month. At the first follow-up, 66.7% of the individuals already reported less trouble sleeping.

Results from a study involving a single participant, a 10-year-old girl with PTSD and sleep disorder, further showed that CBD could work as a sleep aid. The patient received 25mg of a CBD supplement at bedtime, plus an additional 6 – 12mg during the day. In the five months which the study took place, it was found that she had improved quality as well as quantity of sleep.

Although current studies are small, they provide promising preliminary evidence that CBD may work as a sleep aid.

How does CBD oil work?

  1. CBD is absorbed into your bloodstream and interacts with your endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is made up of neurotransmitters and cannabinoid receptors.
  1. The CBD interacts with your Cannabinoid (CB) receptors, which causes them to create endocannabinoids, which are your body’s own version of cannabinoids.
  1. The ECS and endocannabinoids act as a counterattack to your body's natural 'fight or flight' stress response.
  1. This means the stimulation of endocannabinoids helps to calm your body and reduce the effects of anxiety and stress.

Multiple Sclerosis & CBD

What is MS?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that can affect the brain and spinal cord, causing a wide range of potential symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance.

It's a lifelong condition that can sometimes cause serious disability, although it can occasionally be mild. In many cases, it's possible to treat symptoms. Average life expectancy is slightly reduced for people with MS.

It's most commonly diagnosed in people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s although it can develop at any age. It's about 2 to 3 times more common in women than men. MS is one of the most common causes of disability in younger adults.

Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis

The symptoms of MS vary widely from person to person and can affect any part of the body.

The main symptoms include:

  • fatigue
  • difficulty walking
  • vision problems, such as blurred vision
  • problems controlling the bladder
  • numbness or tingling in different parts of the body
  • muscle stiffness and spasms
  • problems with balance and co-ordination
  • problems with thinking, learning, and planning

To manage symptoms, some MS patients turn to cannabidiol, or CBD, a non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant. Scientists are still researching the benefits of CBD for people with MS, but early indications show that CBD might help control some MS symptoms, such as pain and muscle stiffness.

Multiple Sclerosis and Immune System

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease. That means that the symptoms of the disease occur because the immune system is attacking healthy cells in the way that it’s supposed to attack viruses and other pathogens.

In MS, the immune system targets the myelin sheath, a protective coating that wraps around nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain. When the immune system attacks this barrier, it causes inflammation and damage, which can impair the nerve signaling that facilitates movement, breathing, thinking, and so much more.

The severity of MS symptoms varies, depending on the location of the attack and the extent of the damage to the myelin sheath, but they most often include fatigue, muscle weakness or stiffness, and cognitive dysfunction.

Cannabinoids and the Immune System

Cannabinoids are a group of compounds found in the cannabis plant. The two main cannabinoids are THC (the psychoactive ingredient in the plant) and CBD (which does not have a psychoactive component).

The body processes cannabinoids via cannabinoid receptors, which are found in the brain and in immune cells. This is all part of the endocannabinoid system, which regulates inflammation, immune function, motor control, pain, and other bodily functions commonly affected by MS.

This connection helps explain why CBD can be beneficial for MS.

Benefits of CBD for MS

Research suggests that CBD can aid the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis, although more research is needed. Cannabis has anti-inflammatory antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. As such, cannabinoids like CBD and THC are instrumental in treating known autoimmune conditions like ulcerative colitis and Alzheimer’s disease. The active compounds influence the endocannabinoid system, this can result in therapeutic benefits for those suffering from different ailments.

In a recent study, researchers concluded that cannabinoids, including CBD, are “probably effective” at alleviating certain symptoms of MS, including pain and abnormal muscle tightness.

Additional research supported using CBD for Multiple Sclerosis. Here are some key findings:

  • A 2018 scientific review found that CBD supplementation reduced pain, fatigue, inflammation, depression, and spasticity in people with MS, while improving mobility. The authors concluded that recommending CBD supplementation for people with MS would be advisable.
  • A 2014 scientific review found that CBD can help reduce pain, spasticity, and frequent urination in patients with MS.
  • Two different 2021 medical reviews found that in animal models, CBD helps regulate the immune system, reducing the autoimmune response that causes MS symptoms. More research is needed, but in the future this may mean that cannabis-derived medications and CBD could be used to treat the progression of MS, not just the symptoms.

Conclusion

Cannabinoids like CBD and THC have proven medical benefits. If you or someone you know suffers with Multiple Sclerosis, there are several pharmaceutical medications approved for treating the condition. However, these treatment options do not work for every patient. If traditional approaches fail to deliver any remedy, you can consider CBD products to help relieve some of the symptoms and manage the condition. CBD is also a healthy, nutritious organic compound that can improve different aspects of your health.

Cerebral Palsy and CBD

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the name for a group of disorders that affect a person's ability to move and maintain balance and posture. CP is the most common motor disability in childhood. Cerebral means having to do with the brain. Palsy means weakness or problems with using the muscles. CP is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain before, during, or soon after birth that affects a person’s ability to control his or her muscles.

All people with CP have problems with movement and posture. Many also have related conditions such as intellectual disability; seizures; problems with visionhearing, or speech; changes in the spine (such as scoliosis); or joint problems (such as contractures).

Different types of Cerebral Palsy

Doctors classify CP according to the main type of movement disorder involved. Depending on which areas of the brain are affected, one or more of the following movement disorders can occur:

  • Stiff muscles (spasticity)
  • Uncontrollable movements (dyskinesia)
  • Poor balance and coordination (ataxia)

There are four main types of CP:

Spastic Cerebral Palsy - This is the most common type of CP. Spastic CP affects about 80% of people with CP. People with spastic CP have increased muscle tone. This means their muscles are stiff and, as a result, their movements can be awkward.

Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy – people with dyskinetic CP have problems controlling the movement of their hands, arms, feet, and legs, making it difficult to sit and walk. The movements are uncontrollable and can be slow and writhing or rapid and jerky. Sometimes the face and tongue are affected and the person has a hard time sucking, swallowing, and talking. A person with dyskinetic CP has muscle tone that can change (varying from too tight to too loose) not only from day to day, but even during a single day.

Ataxic Cerebral Palsy - People with ataxic CP have problems with balance and coordination. They might be unsteady when they walk. They may have a hard time with quick movements or movements that need a lot of control, like writing. They could have a hard time controlling their hands or arms when they reach for something.

Mixed Cerebral Palsy - Some people have symptoms of more than one type of CP. The most common type of mixed CP is spastic-dyskinetic CP.

Treatments

While there is no known cure for CP, there’s a range of treatments that can help alleviate the symptoms associated with the condition. Parents of children with cerebral palsy will search for everything that can relieve their child's suffering and allow them to function as effectively as possible.

Recent studies have highlighted CBD oil as a potential treatment option for children with cerebral palsy, especially when treating its physical symptoms and managing associated conditions.

Let’s take a look at what science says about the health benefits of CBD for cerebral palsy.

The treatments of cerebral palsy range from physiotherapy to botox injections to oral muscle relaxants and surgical procedures. Muscle relaxants can provide short-term relief, but the benefits are outweighed by potential side effects such as blurred vision, lack of muscle control, or depression. On top of that, people relying on muscle relaxants also have a higher chance of developing dependency and withdrawal symptoms.

CBD’s effects on the brain and neurological system have been widely researched. It has been shown to lessen the number and frequency of seizure attacks in epileptic patients, as well as muscle spasticity associated with Multiple Sclerosis.

But does it help with cerebral palsy? Let's take a look.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex neurobiological network that maintains homeostasis throughout the human body. Studies have identified cannabinoid receptors — CB1 and CB2 — in virtually every region of the human body. Their highest concentrations are found in the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, and immune system.

Researchers have found high cannabinoid receptors in the basal ganglia and cerebellum — the areas that control motor function.

Studies showed that CB1 expression is engaged in spasticity and motor function among patients with neurodegenerative conditions.

A study posted in the journal Therapeutic Advances in Neurological Disorders has shown that CB1 receptors in the central nervous system are targets that can trigger antispastic effects. The authors concluded that cannabinoid-based treatments might potentially improve the signaling of these targets to help improve muscle movements like tremors or spasms.

Furthermore, CB2 expression has been found to block inflammatory proteins called cytokines in the central nervous system. Studies explained that inflamed CNS might be the underlying cause of various symptoms linked to cerebral palsy, such as tremors and spasms.

That being said, more clinical studies are needed to confirm these initial findings —and to help us learn how the activation of ECS can help children with cerebral palsy.

While studies are still being conducted to determine the effectiveness of CBD, many people have found that in provides a variety of benefits. It may help those with cerebral palsy in the following ways:

  • Relaxation - CBD has been found to work as a natural muscle relaxant, and it can also help reduce inflammation. This can provide benefits for those with spastic cerebral palsy, and it can help reduce muscle stiffness and increase a person’s range of motion.
  • Managing seizures - CBD has some anti-epileptic effects, and it has been found to significantly reduce the number of seizures that a person experiences, while also helping to make seizures more manageable.
  • Pain relief - Since CBD boosts serotonin levels, it can provide some relief from the pain that many people with cerebral palsy experience in the muscles and joints.
  • Anxiety reduction - The use of CBD has been found to improve mood. Many children with CP experience “performance anxiety” as they learn to complete their daily tasks, and by reducing anxiety levels, CBD oil may be able to help them function better while improving their overall well-being.

"I was looking for something away from a painkiller" - Trevor Crombie

The Research

Luba Blumkin performed one of the most relevant studies into CBD’s effects on complex motor disorder. Nineteen of the 25 patients studied had cerebral palsy. The 2017 study, which was conducted by the Wolfson Medical Center near Israel’s capital, Tel Aviv, analyzed the effect of CBD on 36 children (aged 1-17) with cerebral palsy.

After analyzing the children for two months to ensure their conditions were stable, the team gave the kids CBD oil three times a day via a feeding tube or orally.

Within four months, there was a noticeable improvement in their condition. Blumkin asserts that the biggest positive change was in motor function. Other benefits included less pain and an improvement in quality of life and sleep.

Research from 2012 found that cannabis provided the best relief for CP patients compared to several other medications.

All of the participants in the study continued taking their existing medication along with the CBD oil. One group received oil with a THC:CBD ratio of 1:6, while another group received oil with a 1:20 ratio. Bar-Lev Schleider said that both doses were effective. All of our products do contain trace amounts of THC, following the UK guidelines.

The Wolfson Medical Center study was extremely important because, until that point, there was relatively little data on CBD’s effect on cerebral palsy. A survey by Adam Hirsh et al., published in the March 2012 edition of the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, found that cannabis provided the best relief for CP patients compared to several other medications.

They reported that a “not-insignificant number of patients with CP are using this drug for pain management and are finding it to be at least as effective as other more standard treatments for pain.”

Final Thoughts

Overall, there is a suggestion that CBD products could have medical efficacy for individuals with cerebral palsy. It may help with symptoms including spasticity, sleep disturbance, and pain. As it doesn’t cause an intoxicating high, medical researchers believe it is safe to give to children, although more studies are needed in the future.

Benefits of CBD for Women
cbd for women

Over time, women may experience a wide range of distinct physical health ailments and concerns. Although many of them, such as PMS, hormonal imbalances, pregnancy, and menopause, can be difficult and uncomfortable, the majority of them are unavoidable components of the female life cycle.

As our understanding of the amazing CBD oil has progressed, we can see an exciting pattern in its therapeutic potential; CBD appears to help in several women’s health conditions.

Could CBD be your new best friend?

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of many active ingredients found in the Cannabis plant; however, unlike its counterpart tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is responsible for the ‘high’ feeling, CBD, is non-psychoactive, it does not change a person’s state of mind when they use it. However, it may produce significant changes in the body, and it is showing many significant health benefits.

How does CBD work?

It interacts with our endocannabinoid system (ECS), The ECS helps to regulate our immunity, energy, mood, memory, pain perception, and much more. It hosts a wide range of functions, ensuring that our mind and body, work in perfect harmony. CBD interacts with receptors throughout the body and has shown to have a therapeutic effect across a wide variety of health conditions. Here, we outline just a few of the ways in which CBD may help to support the mental and physical wellbeing of women all over the world.

Potential Benefits of CBD for Women:

Hormonal Imbalance

CBD may have the ability to provide relief for women suffering from hormonal imbalances. One study investigating the effect of CBD found that it helped regulate the secretion of the stress-activating hormone, cortisol. High levels of cortisol can impact other hormone levels including thyroid-stimulating hormones and sex hormones. Any cortisol-reducing activities can therefore help to support overall hormone balance. In addition, when choosing hemp-based CBD products, you get a boost of omega fatty acids and gamma-linolenic acid, both of which can contribute to hormone health.

Menopause

Menopause is a major hormonal event; estrogen and progesterone levels drop, causing uncomfortable symptoms that many women suffer with in silence. There are cannabinoid receptors throughout the female reproductive system too, and menopause can cause disruption in the endocannabinoid system. This can explain some of the unpleasant side effects of premenopause such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, mood swings, low libido, and hot flushes. It has been suggested that CBD may help to reduce symptoms of menopause, with a recent small-scale study finding CBD could help to relieve chronic pain, lower inflammation and improve sleep – all concerns that can occur during menopause.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition that disproportionately affects women; 1 in 3 women over 50 will experience osteoporosis, in comparison to 1 in 5 men. Osteoporosis is characterized by a weakening of the bones, making them more susceptible to fractures and breaks. Oestrogen plays an important role in bone density. As women experience a drop in oestrogen levels during menopause, they become more vulnerable to osteoporosis.

CBD has been shown to increase osteoclast number and accelerate bone fracture healing in preclinical research and animal models, respectively. Osteoclasts are cells involved in the growth and healing of bones, so CBD may help to sustain bone density in older women.

Pain Relief
Women have to face all sorts of pains throughout their life, from PMS to childbirth, with studies showing that CBD may help to decrease pain by interacting with the endocannabinoid system to reduce inflammation and interact with neurotransmitters.

Women suffering from chronic pain such as headaches, cramps, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and more, have shown improvement in their pain levels by using CBD. We receive amazing feedback from our Bio CBD Oil regarding pain relief.

Autoimmune diseases

Our immune system works hard to keep us safe by attacking foreign cells. In some circumstances, the body misidentifies its own cells as dangerous and begins to attack itself. This is known as an autoimmune disease. Common and autoimmune conditions include type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis (MS) - All of these conditions are twice as frequent in women. Much of our immunological signaling is controlled by our Endocannabinoid System, which can be modulated by CBD's anti-inflammatory effects. As a result, CBD may decrease immune activity.

CBD has been shown to be immunosuppressive in autoimmune models of MS. It also prevented disease-onset in a female animal model of diabetes. This is all early evidence, but these findings show promise for the use of CBD in the future treatment of autoimmune disease.

Anxiety and Depression

Studies have indicated that CBD shows promising results in reducing stress and anxiety levels. CBD oil is often used by alternative medicine practitioners for patients with OCD and social anxiety. Since CBD activates receptors in the brain that produce elevated levels of dopamine, it may be effective for relaxing the mind and body, potentially reducing anxiety levels. Read more about CBD & Anxiety here.

Beauty

One of the biggest beauty trends recently has been the rise of CBD skincare. It is believed that incorporating CBD into your skincare may provide benefits such as strengthening hair follicles, improving the look and health of skin, and minimizing the appearance of dark spots and wrinkles. Studies have also indicated that CBD may help to prevent acne by regulating oil production and lowering inflammation, with the use of topical CBD also being used for skin rashes, eczema, and psoriasis.

Gut Health

Studies have shown that almost 72% of women have suffered from digestive problems, such as IBS within the past year. It has been suggested that CBD may help to regulate digestion and modulate bowel movements, with a study finding that CBD can alleviate the symptoms linked with digestive issues such as cramps, bloating, and nausea.

CBD appears to have countless health benefits, could it be the gimmer of hope that you are looking for?

CBD AND ANXIETY

CBD oil for Anxiety. Do you know someone who has anxiety? Have you had or suffer still from anxiety or stress-related disorder?

If so, there is help! We are understanding more and more every day about what it means to have and live with anxiety, however, it doesn't have to be a life sentence.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is what we feel when we are worried, tense, stressed, or afraid. These can be normal responses to certain situations, for example, you might be worried about paying a bill on time, doing a speech, or you have a job interview coming up. Anxiety is a natural human response when we perceive that we are under threat. It can be experienced through our thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations.

These feelings can give you an awareness of immediate risks and tell you what you need to do in a difficult or dangerous situation. This reaction is commonly known as ‘fight or flight’. ‘Fight or flight’ is a natural and important part of our human body’s chemical processes and can save our lives in certain situations. However, if you remain in a constant state of ‘fight or flight’ then it can cause a host of long-term issues.

Your brain responds to a threat or danger by releasing certain hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones make us feel more alert so we can act faster, make our heart beat faster, and quickly send blood to where it’s needed most. Even if you have only imagined the danger, these hormones cause the physical symptoms of anxiety.

If you have an anxiety disorder these feelings of fear and danger can be ongoing and interrupt your daily routine long after the threat has gone. They can make you feel like things are worse than they actually are. Everyone’s experience of anxiety disorders is different. Not everyone who has an anxiety disorder will experience the same symptoms.

No one fully understands what causes anxiety disorders as the research is constantly being revised, but it is thought that the following factors may have a part to play:

• Genetics: Some people seem to be born more anxious than others. You may get anxiety through your genes.

• Life experience: This could be bad experiences such as being bullied or losing a loved one. It could also include big changes in life such as moving home, losing your job, or pregnancy.

• Drugs: Caffeine in coffee and alcohol can make you feel anxious. Illegal drugs, also known as street drugs can also have an effect.

• Circumstances: Sometimes you know what is causing your anxiety. When the problem goes, so does your anxiety.

Anxiety is a key part of several different disorders, these are some of the most common types of anxiety disorders:

• Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), Panic disorder, Social anxiety disorder, Phobias, Agoraphobia, Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Skin picking, Hair pulling, Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Living with anxiety can be very difficult, but there are steps you can take that might help. Here are some suggestions for you to consider.

Talk to someone you trust, Try to manage your worries, Look after your physical health, Try breathing exercises, Keep a diary, Try peer support.

Let’s have a quick look at currently prescribed drugs for anxiety from the NHS :

  • Escitalopram – Common side effects: diarrhea, drowsiness, ejaculatory disorder, headache, insomnia, nausea, and delayed ejaculation. Other side effects include anorgasmia, constipation, dizziness, dyspepsia, fatigue, decreased libido, diaphoresis, and xerostomia.
  • Paroxetine – Common side effects include changes in vision, drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, sweating, shakiness, anxiety, sleep problems, appetite problems and decreased sex drive.
  • Sertraline – Common side effects: drowsiness or tiredness, insomnia or agitation, indigestion, nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite, sweating, tremors or shaking, sleep problems (insomnia); or decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm.

The Research

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to approve any CBD-based medications for anxiety. However, many studies indicate the substance can be an effective anxiolytic.

One in 13 people around the world lives with an anxiety disorder, making anxiety the most common mental health disorder worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). For those living with anxiety, finding a safe method for managing symptoms is a critical concern.

Quick-acting anti-anxiety medication, such as Xanax and Valium, may offer instant relief but can become addictive. Long-range anxiety medications, such as Prozac, may help reduce symptoms over time, but don’t work for everyone and come with a range of known side effects.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and its supporting chemical constituents have recently captured the spotlight as an alternative or complementary treatment for anxiety.

A study in 2010 found that cannabidiol could reduce symptoms of social anxiety in people with a social anxiety disorder (SAD). Brain scans of participants revealed changes in blood flow to the regions of the brain linked to feelings of anxiety. In this study, cannabidiol not only made participants feel better but also changed the way their brains responded to anxiety.

A 2011 study also found that cannabidiol could reduce social anxiety. For that study, researchers looked specifically at cannabidiol to treat anxiety associated with public speaking.

Research published in 2014 found that CBD oil had anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects in an animal model (In Vivo).

A 2015 analysis of previous studies concluded that CBD oil is a promising treatment for numerous forms of anxiety, including social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The report cautioned, however, that data on long-term use of CBD oil is limited. While research strongly points to the role of cannabidiol in treating short-term anxiety, little is known about its long-term effects, or how it can be used as a prolonged treatment.

A 2016 case study explored whether cannabidiol could reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety-provoked sleep disorder in a child with a history of trauma. Researchers found that cannabidiol reduced the child’s anxiety and helped her sleep.

Can we help you?

The role of cannabidiol as a treatment for anxiety disorders remains unclear, as more long-term studies are required to assess the benefits and risks.

For people with anxiety who have gotten no relief from other treatments, CBD oil offers a potential and hopeful alternative solution.

• Cats are able to hear higher frequencies than BOTH humans and dogs. Their ear muscles also allow them to rotate their ears up to 180°.

With bonfire night not too far away now, it can be quite a distressing time for our furry loved ones. That's where Flora Fusion 200mg tincture can really help soothe those frayed nerves.

What is CBD?

Most of us are familiar with cannabinoids, these are the chemicals in the cannabis plant that gives it its medical and recreational properties. There are over 100 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, all of which interact with different receptors in the body resulting in different effects from the classic THC “high” to the anti-inflammatory properties from CBD.

We know what you’re thinking – but you can ‘relax, man’! Although CBD oil is made from hemp, it doesn’t contain any of the psychoactive properties found in other cannabis compounds. So no, your pet won’t get ‘high’.

Cannabidiol (CBD), one of the main active constituents of the cannabis plant is a safe, all-natural remedy to a number of canine health issues. Pet owners have used it for a wide range of therapeutic and behavioral issues such as:

This is because all animals have an endocannabinoid system (Read more here). Meaning that your pet may have the ability to experience the same advantages of CBD that you would. Because of the similarities between the body structures of us humans and some mammals, a number of proprietors have begun utilizing CBD products for their pets.

Here are some common signs of anxiety to look out for:

There can be one or many symptoms of anxiety in relation to how anxious or stressed your pet is. These are some of the common symptoms that show your pet needs calming.  But how do we go about the issue?  Luckily with some small changes and a bottle of Flora Fusion CBD for pets, you can do your best to make your furry friend's life that bit easier.

The 7 Most Common CBD Benefits for Pets

Flora Fusion CBD oil for pets

One 10ml bottle of Flora Fusion CBD for pets contains 200mg of the highest quality hemp extract and pure salmon oil. The use of salmon oil makes the taste much more pleasant for your furry friend, making the product easy to administer. Our CBD oil for pets is rich in terpenes and has the greatest variety or cannabinoids for maximum effect on your beloved pet.

Flora Fusion CBD oil for pets is very effective, even in low doses, and 100% safe to use. Current studies show it’s near impossible to overdose on CBD. If you accidentally give your dog more than anticipated, there’s a very low chance of it having adverse effects.

We recommend testing Flora Fusion CBD oil for pets on your pet prior to a stressful event, this will give you a chance to identify the perfect dose.

CBD Dosing for Pets

Start with a low dose, and only increase if you don’t see results. A full dropper of Flora Fusion CBD for pets will dispense approximately 1ml (20 drops) of oil which provides 20mg of CBD. A good rule of thumb is 1 drop per 5 kilos of body weight three times a day.

The most common delivery method for CBD for pets is via CBD oil. If your pet is willing, you can place drops directly into their mouths under their tongue (called sublingually in industry terms). But if your pet is resistant to this method, the easiest method is to apply drops to their food.

So with Bonfire Night and New Year's Eve fast approaching, here are some fluffy tips to ensure your four-legged friend has a calm, stress-free evening:

BEFORE THE FIREWORKS

- Check out when the local firework displays are happening in your area so you know exactly when there is going to be some disturbance.

- During the days leading up to Bonfire night, try playing a soundtrack or YouTube video of fireworks quietly in the house. This way your pet can familiarise themselves with the noise.

- Ensure your pet gets plenty of exercise on Bonfire day so that they’re feeling tired by the evening.

- Create a safe place in your home for your pet to retreat to and have some peace and quiet.

- In the event that you do take your pet outside, make sure they are wearing a collar with an up-to-date ID tag on.

- Don't forget the little guys - if you have rabbits, guinea pigs, or other small animals in the garden, remember that they will be just as affected as cats and dogs. Place a cover over their home to soundproof it, leaving a small gap so they can still see out. Make sure they have extra bedding to burrow into when scared.

Our pets’ bodies are uniquely designed much like the human body. From their organs and muscles to their senses and desires, everything in their body has a purpose, a function, and a connection to one another. Their endocannabinoid system is just as involved in various processes and functions as the human endocannabinoid system. When we understand how CBD oil interacts with their ECS, we can potentially provide relief from certain health ailments and improve their quality of life.

Mental Health

In Scotland, around one in three people are estimated to be affected by mental health difficulties in any year.

This year, World Mental Health Day (10th October) comes at a time when all of our lives have changed dramatically. The coronavirus pandemic has had a real impact on the mental health and wellbeing of many of us, and greater investment in mental health has never been so important.

What is Mental Health?

Mental Health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including:

  • Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry
  • Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse
  • Family history of mental health problems

What causes Mental Health?

There is no single cause for mental health disorders; in fact, they can be caused by a mixture of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. People who have a family history of mental health disorders may be more prone to developing one at some point. Changes in brain chemistry from substance abuse or changes in diet can also cause mental disorders. Psychological factors and environmental factors such as upbringing and social exposure can form the foundations for harmful thought patterns associated with mental disorders. Your mental health doesn’t always stay the same. It can change as circumstances change and as you move through different stages of your life.

Mental health is everyone’s business. We all have times when we feel down, stressed, or frightened. Most of the time those feelings pass. But sometimes they develop into a more serious problem and that could happen to any one of us. Everyone is different. You may bounce back from a setback while someone else may feel weighed down by it for a long time.

Mental Health problems have a stigma associated with them. This means that people are cautious about them and don't talk about them much. Many people don't feel comfortable expressing their feelings. However, it's important to know that it is healthy to know and say how you're feeling.

What Are the Signs of a Mental Health Disorder?

Depending on the disorder, circumstances, and other factors, the signs and symptoms of mental illness can vary. Mental illness symptoms can affect emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. If someone you know experiences erratic thought patterns, unexplained changes in mood, lack of interest in socializing, lack of empathy, inability to tell the difference between reality and fantasy, or a seeming lack of control, that person may have a mental health disorder. This is, by no means, a complete list of symptoms.

In 2017, ‘Our World In Data’ studied the estimates of mental health disorder prevalence and the associated disease burden. This study estimates that 792 million people live with a mental health disorder. This is slightly more than one in ten people globally!

As you can see, anxiety outpaced depression, making it the most common mental health disorder. Rather than commonly prescribed treatments, most people are turning to CBD products to treat their mental health disorders.

In 2017, Keith Myers explored the effect that CBD oil has on mental health and anxiety disorders.. here are his findings:

Is CBD Effective for treating mental health disorders?

Research shows that CBD can help treat severe medical conditions like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, anxiety, and depression. CBD products have been products of interest in treating social anxiety and anxiety disorders. A recent clinical trial has shown that CBD can effectively reduce anxiety.

Existing studies suggest that CBD holds promise in the treatment of a number of conditions including depression, anxiety, epilepsy, and sleep issues, among other things. Below are some of the findings;

Epilepsy

A large-scale study on the use of CBD in the treatment of pediatric epilepsy found that CBD reduced the frequency of seizures by more than 50% in 43% of the patients with Dravet syndrome. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a cannabis-derived medication containing CBD, Epidiolex, to treat certain childhood seizure disorders.

Anxiety

Some studies suggest that CBD may help alleviate symptoms of anxiety. One study looks at the possible neural basis for CBD reducing symptoms of social anxiety disorder. A 2015 study published in the journal Neurotherapeutics analyzed the existing preclinical studies on the use of CBD for anxiety and found that CBD was effective for a number of anxiety conditions including: Generalized anxiety disorder, Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The permanente Journal published a study reporting that 79% of participants experienced a reduction in anxiety.

Depression

Experts believe that CBD's potential benefits for depression are related to its positive effect on serotonin receptors in the brain. Low serotonin levels are likely connected to depression. CBD doesn’t necessarily boost serotonin levels, but it may affect how your brain’s chemical receptors respond to the serotonin that’s already in your system.

2014 animal study found that CBD’s effect on these receptors in the brain produced both an antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects.

A more recent 2018 review of existing studies concluded that CBD has anti-stress effects, which may reduce depression related to stress.

PTSD

2019 literature review on CBD and PTSD found that CBD may be helpful. However, it concludes that scientists still need to carry out more research into its therapeutic uses, effectiveness, and safety.

Some research suggests that taking CBD immediately after a traumatic event might make it more difficult for the brain to form the memories that may later develop and cause PTSD symptoms.

2016 study found evidence that drugs acting on the endocannabinoid system may reduce the symptoms that a person with PTSD experiences after a memory extinction procedure. This is because the endocannabinoid system, which includes CBD receptors, can affect anxiety and memory, two factors that play a significant role in PTSD.

How does it compare to antidepressant medications?

When it comes to treating depression, CBD does appear to have some benefits over antidepressant medications. Most antidepressant medications take weeks to start working. However, a 2019 animal study found that CBD has a fast and sustained antidepressant-like effect.

CBD may also result in fewer side effects than antidepressant medication. Insomnia, sexual dysfunction, mood swings, and agitation are common side effects of antidepressants. CBD has not shown similar issues.

CAUTION

As mentioned, this is an area that’s still being actively studied, and new research and reviews are published every year. As researchers begin to better understand CBD and its potential benefits or concerns, information about how to most effectively use the product will continue to change.

While CBD may offer some benefits over antidepressant medications, it isn't a replacement. Never stop taking prescribed medication without talking to your health care provider first. Abruptly stopping the medication may cause serious side effects. While studies show the compound is generally safe, it may interact with other medications. If you are considering CBD, it is a good idea to review medications and other supplements with your healthcare provider.

Flora Equine - CBD for Horses

Hi Everyone!! Thanks for visiting us at our new site: Flora Equine.

Flora Fusion products are Hemp products and as such not to be used for competition purposes. The use of products is at the discretion of our customers and Flora Equine takes no responsibility if found to be in breach of FEI competition conditions.

To kick off this new arm of our brand and to help Horse owners and lovers everywhere know of why we are doing what we do, it is important that we touch on the very basics of how Cannabidiol (CBD) works. We aim to educate (apologies if it’s a bit sciencey) on what it means to utilize CBD for humans and, of course, our horses. We also ultimately wish to alleviate any uncertainty about engaging in a regular CBD protocol for your Horse's overall Health and Well-Being. The following blog has been written to help you do just that.

We want to welcome you all to our newest venture and thank you for your support in helping us to get the word out on the benefits of our products for horses and their owners alike.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD)… is one of over 400 active chemicals in Hemp plants. Amazing isn’t it. Why is it important? Because it engages with a brilliantly complex system in our bodies. CBD interacts with receptors on our cells, creating a fantastic array of responses in keeping us healthy and happy. It is best we start from the start but please click on relevant links and explore the fantastic world of information surrounding you and your horse's CBD journey.

The Endocannabinoid System

The Endocannabinoid System is a remarkable medical discovery uncovered in the 1990s. This was achieved after a series of investigatory research activities starting in the 1960s in response to restricted research regulations and challenges. Some may argue that the Hemp revolution has been a long time coming, given that we have long employed this plant for medicinal purposes (Remember the Pen Tsao Ching). The implications of the discoveries were to astound medical researchers. A major biological system that has an impact on a wide range of physiological and neurological activities in humans.

The entire goal of this system, it appears, is to maintain homeostasis in the human body across many key tasks. Now here is the really really interesting thing! Most animals have one too. Remarkable isn’t it? There exists (and only recently discovered in scientific and existential terms), a biological, neurological, and physiological system, that is uniform in its functions and connects the majority of human, animal, and marine life on this planet, including Horses.

Here at Flora Equine, we understand completely the love that a person can have for their horse. If you’ve ever wanted to feel closer and more connected to your Equine family member, here is the place to be. You're part of a quantum signaling network of maintenance that's almost miraculous, and you're not even aware of it! This is just incredible!

What do we know about a Horses ECS and will Flora Equine products get my horse high?

A Flora Equine product will never, ever get your horse high. CBD is known to be an antagonist (1), which means it does not bind to cannabinoid receptors. CBD will not stimulate the ECS of a horse in the same way that other possible agonists that bind/activate cannabinoid receptors may. Phyto-chemical agonists are found in full-spectrum products like ours, but at levels that are insignificant. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC: the cannabinoid that gets you high) is one of these agonists at 0.02 percent and below. At this microdose level, only mild agonist activity is observed, with no possibility of a sedative or stimulating high.

It is also important to remember that every Horse (just like their owners) is unique in its health needs, therefore one size doesn't fit all when it comes to feeding this incredible system.
We know a lot about the ECS functions of animals, and while much more study is needed, they basically have the same internal functions as humans, as we are both mammalian species. Obviously, there are subjective differences to suit each mammal on the planet however we have a lot of similarities. One of them is the ECS.

To mention a few common ailments, a horse will experience discomfort, mood swings, sleep issues, nutritional issues, and even worry. All of which are related to ECS functionality. The activation of Cannabinoid receptors in equine cells is essential for targeted treatments for these diseases, just as it is for humans.

But wait… that should mean that the product is not as effective if there isn’t a large amount of THC agonist potential right? That's when the quality of the recipe comes into play, and Terpenes step in to rescue the day.

Terpenes

Terpenes are amazing chemical profiles found in the Hemp plant and other plants. They are responsible for the smells, flavors, and pigments (colors) of plants. Terpenes of various categories are abundant throughout our natural world, and the benefits these phytochemical substances have to offer to make them a genuine gift from our planet.

Beta-Caryophyllene is a very essential Terpene to consider. The significance of this in a Flora Equine product is its capacity to function as an agonist on CB2 receptors as part of your Horse's ECS without raising the THC concentration to get the same effect.

This highlights the necessity to ensure that products are made to strict standards while also using effective formulae. At Flora Equine, all of our products are vetted for quality and efficacy and adhere to strict FEI guidelines; the method of administration we recommend takes full advantage of the information we know and want to share.

What is the most important thing to know for safe administration of a Flora Equine product?

The most essential factor to consider when using CBD for horses is the effect that CBD has on your horse's liver when combined with other medicines. Equine biology, like human biology, contains chemical metabolism processed in their liver by the Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzyme family.

We also know that the CYP450 enzyme family, which exists in humans, also exists in horses. This impacts how a horse may break down other possible medicines, therefore caution is necessary when providing CBD when a horse is undergoing certain therapeutic treatments. It is not because the medicines combine to cause toxicity; rather, both substances compete for the same enzymes that are required to break down the other medication. Consider the following analogy: there are too many passengers on one bus, and everyone is clambering for a seat.

How to use the Flora Equine product range.

At Flora Fusion we understand the love for your horse and want to provide the best method of administration and safe use of our products. We have a great range, which is detailed below.

Flora Hoof Repair

A wonderful balm made entirely of natural and synthetic-free components. When chilled, the balm will remain solid, but when heated, it will liquefy. Clean the hoof and sole well, then apply balm to all hoof regions using a gentle brush. The balm should be used to the Coronet band, toes, soles, and frogs in particular. Apply on a daily basis for therapeutic purposes or on a weekly basis to maintain an already healthy hoof. Horses with happy hooves are happy horses.

Derma Repair

Horses are susceptible to a range of skin issues and conditions. Whether it's Sweet Itch caused by biting bugs, Dermatitis or even minor cuts and abrasions from daily hacks, a Horse can have a poor time of it when these conditions are left untreated.

Flora Equine Derma Repair can be used to help soothe the effects of these conditions and help the skin repair itself afterward. With a handy pump to administer the product to affected areas, it is easy to use. Wash the affected area and dry. Shake product well. Apply a generous amount of the oil to the affected area and let it absorb as best as possible. Use once daily.

Flora Equines' range of ingestible oils is made from high-quality hemp sources in Germany. This biomass is then converted into the formulas we have on offer in Holland and meets EU Food Standards and GMP practice in its production. The highly enriched oil full of Terpenes and Cannabinoids allows for a fantastic boost to the overall health and well-being of horses' immune and neurological functions. Shake all products vigorously before use.

Focus

Flora Equine 'Focus' was created with the purpose of administering 3000mg of CBD at 100mg per day at a low dosage. Best purchased after the first trial of Flora Equine 'Maintain' has been completed and the findings of that trial have been assessed.

The goal of this product is motivated by the fact that certain horses do not require as much CBD to produce the desired results. Focus is a wonderful low-cost and low-dose formula for horses that owners may add to their broader nutritional requirements whether the horse has a problem or not. Keeping 'Happy Horses'… well… Happy.

Maintain

Our recommended first product is Flora Equine 'Maintain.' It is the initial stage of assessing if your horse needs less or more CBD subjectively, with a substantial 6000mg of CBD and supporting terpene compound following approx. 200mg each day for 30 days. Flora Equine would then utilise your comments and real-world data to find the optimal strategy. This is an excellent moderate strength product for any horse of any size to begin their ‘Happy Horse' journey.

Pro

Flora Equine 'Pro' is our first product with a higher dosage recommended. It can be acquired after the first usage of Maintain or for horses that are extremely resistant to treatment from the start. With a staggering 9000mg of CBD and a possible dose of 300mg per day, this product and dosage has proved life-changing for Equine owners of mischievous or behaviorally maladjusted horses, as well as for serious inflammatory diseases. While we always recommend starting with our Maintain for newcomers, Flora Equine ‘Pro' is a strong strength recipe for the most difficult situations.

Dosaging

When it comes to dose, each horse is unique, and unlike traditional medicines or supplemental regimens, CBD is best provided as a 'method' rather than a fixed or strict application structure.

A human can tolerate anywhere from 5 to 100mg of CBD on average, depending on their health and need. Horses are significantly heavier than humans and so require a greater quantity to get the same outcomes.

Flora Equine conducted voluntary product testing with a small control group of horses for a variety of reasons. We were able to discover that a dosage of between 100mg and 300mg per day is a reasonable mean average to work from, and our trial clients were pleased with our outcomes, which included a very bad horse making it into Santa's nice list. The information below is given to assist guide use throughout a 30-day period.

How CBD may help Arthritis

CBD and arthritis

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is the swelling and tenderness of one or more of your joints. The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness, it can affect people of all ages – even children and teenagers. Arthritis isn't a single condition and there are several different types, the most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Around 10 million people in the UK are thought to have arthritis. If you have pain in or around a joint or joint’s that doesn’t go away after a few days, you should see a doctor. Finding out what’s causing your pain is key to finding the right treatment and self-help options.

Although there’s no cure for arthritis, treatments have improved greatly in recent years and, for many types of arthritis, particularly inflammatory arthritis, there’s a clear benefit in starting treatment at an early stage.

Arthritis can make life difficult by causing pain and making it harder to get about. The symptoms of arthritis can change from week to week, and even from day to day.

Using CBD oil for chronic pain

Cannabinoids, such as CBD, interact with receptors that influence pain and inflammation in the body. Everyone has a cell-signaling system known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Receptors are tiny proteins that are attached to your cells. They receive signals, mostly chemical ones, from different stimuli and help your cells respond.

Experts believe CBD attaches itself indirectly to the cannabinoid receptors. These receptors are responsible for regulating a wide range of behaviors, including appetite, pain, moods, and even your memory. This explains why CBD has such a broad influence on a variety of conditions, whether they’re emotional or physical.  This could mean that CBD oil and other products may benefit people with chronic pain, such as Arthritis.

Fortunately, Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the natural remedies able to treat disorders like arthritis effectively. However this doesn't mean that we can go around saying that we have a cure for pain relief, we can only go off the customer feedback and a number of promising studies, here are a few...

• To begin with, CBD has demonstrated that it has potent anti-inflammatory properties. A study was done showing that CBD can reduce inflammation and rheumatism-related pain. More importantly, it does so without the unwanted and potentially dangerous side effects that some of the most commonly used pharmaceuticals have.

A 2017 study found that CBD may be a safe and useful treatment option for joint pain associated with osteoarthritis.

A 2020 study found that CBD increases intracellular calcium levels, reduces cell viability and production of rheumatoid arthritis synovial fibroblasts (RASF).

The Arthritis Foundation recently did a survey, and more than 2,600 arthritis patients answered. People with many different types of arthritis responded – the majority of whom suffer from osteoarthritis (52%) or rheumatoid arthritis (45%) for 10 or more years.

The Results:

CBD products to help treat arthritis

Fortunately, we are happy to share our advice and customer experience to assist you in finding the right product for your specific needs.

The first product that comes to mind in the search for a product to help treat arthritis, is our popular Bio Water Soluble CBD.
