What is CBD?
CBD is a cannabinoid that interacts with our body’s built-in endocannabinoid system, or ECS, to maintain balance and wellbeing.
CBD comes in a range of different preparations including oils, water-soluble preparations, skin creams and edibles. How much you take will depend on variables including your age, weight, diet, metabolism, CBD tolerance, and any conditions or diseases you might have. It’s best to start with a low dose and work your way up to the level that works for you. All our products come with a usage guide that explains the best way to do this.
How does CBD benefit us?
Increasingly, a healthy ECS is becoming recognised by scientists as vital in keeping our bodies in an optimal state. Although we all make our own CBD to some extent, many of us are deficient. Plant cannabinoids, or phytocannabinoids, from hemp or cannabis plants work just as well so taking them tops us up.
The ECS helps our bodies fight off infection. It also plays a part in the production of healthy cells. We know that stimulating the ECS can have a positive impact in reducing the symptoms of many conditions.
Is CBD oil legal?
Yes, CBD oil is legal in Scotland and the rest of the UK. It’s the cannabinoid THC that has been prohibited under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. It’s THC one that makes you high.
The new regulations that came into effect on November 1, 2018, allow for certain preparations with a high THC content to be made available to people with specific conditions under licence from some specialists.
This is not what we sell. We make no medical claims for our products which all fall within legal guidelines for CBD as a food supplement. Our products do not exceed the legal limit of 0.2 per cent THC.
Other frequently asked questions
No, another cannabinoid does that – THC. Not all cannabinoids do the same job within the body. CBD is psychoactive in that it can affect brain response in a similar way to, say, lavender essential oil, but you won’t get high on it.
We’re still waiting for more details to emerge, but the new laws appear to concern medicinal cannabis only, not already legal CBD supplements of the kind that we make and sell.
The biggest difference between the two is that medicinal cannabis, or medical marijuana, contains THC which is psychoactive and can give you a high. THC-rich marijuana is a Class B drug. Legal CBD preparations in the UK are required to have a very low THC content and do not give you a high.
There can be negative side effects to taking THC, including:
· Lack of concentration
· Increased appetite
· Loss of coordination
· Shallow breathing
Some people report no negative side effects but for others these can be pronounced and unpleasant.
CBD or CBD oil causes no mind-altering side effects. It can be safely given to children, people who might be sensitive to THC and anyone who doesn’t want to experience a marijuana high.V
It’s widely accepted that CBD products for sale in the UK are only allowed to have a maximum THC content of 0.2%. However, closer inspection of the relevant laws show that this relates more to the hemp plant itself before processing rather than the end preparation. The Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001 make it clear that any product derived from low-THC cannabis grown legally under licence as industrial hemp is “exempt” from being categorised as an illegal drug provided it contains “not more than one milligram” of THC or CBN, a more mildly psychoactive cannabinoid. You can read the regulations .
All our products are fully compliant with UK and EU laws and we go to great lengths to ensure they are safe.
Our main line of CBD products is produced within the UK at a UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) Laboratory which follows strict guidelines in labelling and manufacturing protocols. This guarantees that what you see on the label is what you get.
Our full spectrum products and non-CBD products are sourced by reputable UK and international suppliers. We give each one a full Flora Fusion quality criteria assessment before we release it onto the market.
Isolate is a recent addition to the CBD product family and it’s proving to be very popular. It’s what is left when everything else is removed from the whole plant extract.
We hear a lot about CBD, but in fact it is one of more than 100 different cannabinoids that have been identified in the cannabis sativa plant. CBD isolate is pure and contains around 99% CBD on its own with no other cannabinoid present.
After normal extraction, CBD oil contains CBD plus a range of other cannabinoids, fatty acids and some plant matter like chlorophyll. To make isolate, this oil is then purified and filtered further before being winterized, a process that removes the excess wax, fat and chlorophyll. The result is a pure white crystalline powder that has no taste or smell and is THC-free.
In this form, CBD can be mixed easily other wellbeing preparations without changing the taste or smell, as well as skincare products and hair treatments.
Unlike CBD isolate, full spectrum CBD oil also contains a range of cannabinoids, essential vitamins and minerals, fatty acids, protein, terpenes and fibre. The main compounds are CBD and CBDA, or cannabidiolic acid.
Using a full spectrum oil with a range of cannabinoids and other elements can be more beneficial than using CBD isolate because of the entourage effect where each of the elements works better in the company of others.
