CBD and Arthritis

Updated: Nov 13, 2023

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that has shown promise in preclinical studies to reduce inflammation and pain associated with arthritis.

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation in a joint. In the UK, millions of people have arthritis or other, similar conditions that affect the joints. Arthritis affects people of all ages, including children.

Arthritis affects around 58.5 million* people in the US and 10 million* people in the UK.

Types of arthritis

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most 2 common types of arthritis.

Osteoarthritis

Is a degenerative condition that affects joint cartliage and bones, causing pain and stiffness. It is the most common type of arthritis in the UK. It most often develops in people in their mid-40s or older. It is also more common in women and individuals with a family history of the condition. But it can occur at any age as a result of an injury or be associated with other joint-related conditions, such as gout or rheumatoid arthritis.

The most commonly affected joints are those in the:

  • Hands

  • Spine

  • Knees

  • Hips

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is less common than osteoarthritis. It often starts when a person is between 30 and 50 years old. Women are more likely to be affected than men. In rheumatoid arthritis, the bodys immune system targets affected joints, which leads to pain and swelling. People with rheumatoid arthritis can also develop problems with other tissues and organs in their body. Find out more about Rheumatoid arthritis here

Arthritis: How do you approach it?

There are ways that you can help yourself when it comes to addressing arthritic changes, these include increasing your level of movement, getting rid of toxic items, eating nourishing meals, healing your digestive system, and avoiding processed foods. These are a simple set of adjustments that everyone can undertake, and we agree that adding a CBD supplement is a great way to boost your overall health and nutrition. Whether you have rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, or osteoarthritis, it's worthwhile to investigate these lifestyle modifications. Regardless of the type of issue you are dealing with, we firmly believe that CBD is a great complement to any diet for most individuals.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol, which is a naturally occurring compound found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Unlike its well-known counterpart, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is not psychoactive and does not produce a "high" feeling. Instead, it is known for its potential therapeutic benefits, such as reducing anxiety, inflammation, and pain, as well as improving sleep and mood. CBD is commonly found in various forms, including oils, capsules, tinctures, and topical creams.

How does CBD work?

CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system, or ECS, which is intertwined with many of our body’s natural systems, including our immune system and central nervous system. When something is functioning outside of the right range, your body activates your ECS to help correct it. So, when you overheat and begin to sweat, thank your ECS for working to cool you down. If you have chronic pain, it is your ECS that works to ensure that it is manageable.

But since CBD does not make up a natural part of our diets, most people do not do anything to support their endocannabinoid system. Taking cannabinoids from a high-quality full-spectrum plant extract, such as those we sell at Flora Fusion, is a great way to naturally support your ECS!

The Studies

A novel anonymous questionnaire was created to evaluate perceived efficacy of cannabidiol for the treatment of arthritis. A self selected convenience sample was recruited through online sources between May 5, 2020, and November 5, 2020.

CBD was associated with improvements in pain (83%), physical function (66%), and sleep quality (66%).

Another study done by diagnosis type (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid, or other autoimmune arthritis) found improvements among groups for physical function, favoring the osteoarthritis group. The overall cohort reported a 44% reduction in pain after CBD use. The osteoarthritis group had a greater percentage reduction and point reduction in pain compared to rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune arthritis. The majority of respondents reported a reduction or cessation of other medications after CBD use (65%).

  • Reductions in anti-inflammatory (31.1%), acetaminophen (18.2%), opioids (8.6%).

  • Discontinuation of anti-inflammatories (17.8%), acetaminophen (17.8%), and opioids (18.9%).

Some animal studies suggest that CBD could help treat arthritis and relieve associated inflammatory pain. For example:

  • A 2017 study found that CBD might be a safe and useful treatment option for joint pain associated with osteoarthritis.

  • A 2016 study found that the topical application of CBD had the potential to relieve pain and inflammation associated with arthritis.

  • A 2014 review looking into animal research concluded that CBD may be an effective treatment for osteoarthritis.

  • A 2011 study found that CBD helped reduce inflammatory pain in rats by affecting how pain receptors respond to stimuli.

In conclusion

Clinicians and patients should be aware of the various alternative therapeutic options available to treat their symptoms of arthritis, especially in light of the increased accessibility to cannabidiol products. The present study found associations between CBD use and improvements in patient’s arthritis symptoms and reductions in other medications. Future research should focus on exploring the benefits of CBD use in this patient population with clinical trials.

Reviews

"I have arthritis. CBD oil takes away all my inflammation pain . I can now go up and down stairs without holding on to the bannister. I don't look, or feel, like I'm a hundred years old, when I get out of bed. I can walk much further and for longer. I stopped taking my prescription painkillers. This means I no longer suffer gastritis. I tried buying CBD oil elsewhere, but it had no effect. I was sold Hemp Oil as CBD Oil and it doesn't work."
